Assistive Technology
Begun in 1988, RCIL's Technology program has grown into a facility equipped with state-of-the-art assistive technology for education, rehabilitation, communication, employment and independent living.
The program has something for everyone and is open to the general public. Family members, people with disabilities, and professionals have access to adapted technology (AT) resources, including training, technical assistance, computer access, and the leasing and purchasing of adaptive equipment purchasing, leasing, training, technical assistance and computer access. RCIL staff take a comprehensive approach, embracing the whole range of simple and complex adapted technology. The Resource Library also offers expertise in customized educational curriculums, the use of equipment, and specific technology training.
Staff are skilled at demonstrating ways to incorporate technology into everyday life and keep current on the latest in assistive technologies in order to provide visitors with up-to-date information and resources. The Technology staff is also available for workshops, trainings, and conferences on a range of topics, including computer adaptations and software, augmentative communication devices, and funding resources
Consumers and professionals are welcome to visit the Technology Program during RCIL's regular hours (8:30 AM - 4:30 PM, M-F); appointments are encouraged. The Utica program offers an Open Lab on Wednesdays from 3 - 6 PM for walk-in assistance or to explore the hundreds of software programs available for both Mac and PC.
Services offered through the Technology program include the following:
- Resource Library -- The Assistive Device and Accessible Toy libraries contain a broad range of assistive devices, adapted equipment, switches, and toys available for demonstration, evaluation, and lending. The library is a member of the Mid-York mobile delivery system to libraries in Oneida, Herkimer, and Madison County. With a Mid-York Library card, loan items can be delivered via this system to destination convenient to you.
- Buy Assistive Devices -- It's easy to purchase exactly the equipment you need through RCIL's Technology program. RCIL's staff has the expertise to guide you through the process of acquiring the right technology for your specific application.
