I have recently become disabled and/or have a loved one in this situation -- where can we turn for help? What resources are available to us and what are our options?
This can be a confusing time, especially for someone new to the realm of disability support services. You're not the first, and -- most importantly -- you're not alone. There are numerous agencies and organizations whose purpose is to provide support, equipment and health care needs, vocational training, and guidance to people in exactly your situation. Generally, your best solution will be some personalized combination of the many services that exist in our community to help support you.
That said, it's not always easy to figure out how to access these services and supports. RCIL's staff are considered some of the foremost authorities on disability-related issues and the ins-and-outs of navigating the support structures in place in our community and across the state.
One of our core purposes as an independent living center is to provide information and referral - and we don't just do this for our own programs. Rather, we work as a team with each individual to determine the best combination of community supports for that person and help advocate to make sure they get what they need to remain independent and achieve their personal goals.
