Youth Leadership

The Youth Leadership Project, which is currently in Utica and expanding to Rome, was created to help teens and young adults with developmental disabilities to hone the skills necessary to succeed in integrated community environments.

Individual and group activities help students develop independent living skills and build self esteem during the transition years. Students meet weekly and participate in job shadowing, employment readiness activities, and training in daily living skills. Using laptop computers that neutralize their disability and thus level the playing field, students communicate with other teens across the country and around the world.

The Youth Leadership program includes the following:

  • Individual and group activities to promote independent living skills, decision making, leadership, self-advocacy, employment, and community living
  • Vocational and transitional planning
  • Development of self-advocacy skills
  • Coordination of community services
