Work Experience Requirements

Three (3) years of experience working with children and/or parents of children who have disabilities.  Please highlight this experience in your resume.

Educational Requirements

A Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services, Education, Social Work, Special Education, Psychology, Counseling, Speech & Language Pathology or a related field is heavily preferred.  A High School Diploma is required.

Description

We are currently searching for a Family Education Specialist to provide resources, trainings, and strategies to parents of school-aged children with disabilities to enhance their skills and confidence to work effectively with schools and other community agencies.  The position is based in Watertown, but the position requires travel throughout St. Lawrence county with reimbursable mileage.  The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Schedule and facilitate workshop presentations to providers, parents, and event attendees;
  • Locate, schedule, and attend outreach activities in the community;
  • Disseminate information regarding special education topics, local programs, and other local service agencies to event attendees;
  • Take initial calls and follow-up with families, educational personnel, and other service agency professionals; and
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with school district, and other community service agency personnel.

Skills

Teach and present information to adult audiences, integrate hands on activities to workshops, address and provide solutions to concerns of parents and professionals, ability to network, creatively develop new materials for presentations and publication, complete required documentation of activities and contribute to required reports, follow processes and procedures, excellent verbal and written communication, working knowledge of computers, Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Knowledge

A familiarity with ADA and other state and federal special education laws and procedures.  Knowledge of child development principles, school programs/curriculums, teaching strategies and classroom management techniques for school-age children.
