Free Tax Preparation Program

Mohawk Valley Asset Building Coalition

TRAIN TO BE AN IRS-CERTIFIED TAX PREPARER!

The Mohawk Valley Asset Building Coalition in partnership with the Resource Center for Independent Living and United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica Area announce it is actively seeking volunteers to become IRS-certified tax preparers for the 2017–2018 Tax Season.

Volunteers serving as tax preparers, screeners, greeters, language interpreters, site coordinators, and quality reviewers are needed to staff Free Tax Preparation Initiative sites in Utica, Rome, Herkimer, Dolgeville and Ilion.

Volunteers need not have any prior tax preparation training or experience. The free IRS-certified training program is comprehensive and all-inclusive. After completion of training, volunteers are asked to commit at least one shift per week (approximately two–four hours/week). However, volunteers are welcome to commit as many hours as desired.

Make a difference in your community! Become a volunteer tax preparer!!

The Free Tax Preparation Initiative offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

Last year’s team of dedicated volunteers completed a total of 1,524 federal returns and 1,600 state returns, bringing a total of $2.3 million in refunds back to the local community.

Deadline to signup for the free IRS-certified training program is Friday, November 10. Training begins on Wednesday, November 15 in Rome and Thursday, November 16 in Utica.

Free Tax Preparation Initiative sites will be open from January 26, 2018 through April 17, 2018.

Those interested in volunteering should contact the Free Tax Preparation Coordinator by calling 315–272–1888, or emailing EITC@rcil.com.
