Office on Violence Against Women Disability Grant Program

Working in collaboration with the YWCA Mohawk Valley, RCIL is identifying ways to improve services to individuals with disabilities who are experiencing or have experienced domestic and/or sexual violence.

This three-year grant cycle began in December 2014, and has provided both RCIL and YWCA the opportunity to learn from one another about disability and abuse as well as our organizations’ philosophies and services, enabling us to improve the way we provide services to people who are at the intersection of disability and abuse.

  • 80% of women with disabilities have been sexually assaulted.
  • People with disabilities stay in dangerous conditions much longer than those without disabilities.
  • Approximately 5 million vulnerable adults annually become crime victims.
  • In approximately 98% of cases of abuse, the perpetrator is known and trusted by, and in a care providing position to the victim (Barrier Free Living: bfl.org).
