Michelle Murphy grew up—and still resides—in New Hartford, NY. She earned her Master’s in Social Work from the University at Albany and began her career serving the community at the Oneida County Office for the Aging and Continuing Care. Today, Michelle is proud to celebrate 17 years with the Resource Center for Independent Living (RCIL), where she serves as Chief Corporate Compliance Officer.
Michelle was drawn to RCIL because of its unwavering commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities. “I am very grateful to have the opportunity to contribute to an organization whose mission truly guides our work,” she shares. For Michelle, RCIL’s mission is more than words—it’s a daily reminder that the work being done impacts lives in meaningful ways. Upholding this mission motivates her to ensure RCIL’s practices meet the highest standards of ethics, responsibility, respect, and self-determination.
She describes RCIL’s work environment as collaborative, mission-driven, and supportive. “Staff across departments share a genuine commitment to helping others, and there is a strong sense of teamwork and dedication,” Michelle says. Her favorite part of the job is partnering with departments across the organization to deliver high-quality, person-centered services that meet regulatory standards. She enjoys being a resource for staff—helping them navigate complex requirements and strengthen practices that promote clarity and integrity.
Like many in the human services field, Michelle and her team have faced the challenge of adapting to an ever-evolving landscape of regulatory requirements. While demanding, these changes have strengthened the team’s resilience and adaptability. Among her proudest accomplishments is enhancing RCIL’s Compliance Program to meet regulatory and quality standards.
Outside of work, Michelle enjoys traveling, baking, reading, and spending time with family and friends. She feels blessed to have a son who makes her proud every day.
