RCIL AT Tuesday: Captions Create Access—Spotlighting the Power of Text to Unlock Audio Experiences
Calling all caption users—this AT Tuesday is for you! Captions are a powerful form of assistive technology that make audio content accessible by converting sound into readable text in real time. From dialogue and sound effects to music cues and speaker identification, captions ensure that everyone can fully experience media. Whether open or closed, captions break down barriers and open up stories, conversations, and information to all. At RCIL, we celebrate the tools that make inclusion possible—because accessibility is for everyone.
Calling all caption users! Today’s AT Tuesday post is for you. Captions convert audio content of any kind of media into text that is readable in real time as the content plays. Not only does that include dialogue, but also sounds effects, musical descriptions, identifications of off-camera speakers, and any other element of an audial experience. (After all, those are important parts of a story we all need to access!) Captions can be further categorized into open captions or closed captions.
Open captions automatically appear as they are embedded into the media, whereas closed captions must be turned on by the viewer.
