  2. Building Everyday Confidence: RCIL’s Free Laundry Skills…

Doing laundry is one of those everyday tasks many people take for granted—but for individuals with disabilities, it can be a major barrier to independence. That’s why RCIL created a hands‑on Laundry Skills Program designed to make this important life skill accessible, supportive, and even fun.

Offered through LIFE at RCIL and made possible through a grant from the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties, this free community program gives participants the tools, guidance, and encouragement they need to take charge of their own laundry routines with confidence. Whether someone is learning for the first time or just needs extra support, our team is here to help every step of the way.

What the Program Offers

RCIL provides everything needed for a successful laundry day—just bring your own laundry, and we’ll supply the rest.

Participants receive:

  • Laundry detergent
  • Dryer sheets
  • Laundry bags
  • Hangers
  • Payment for all laundering services
  • Step‑by‑step support from RCIL staff

From sorting and washing to drying and folding, our team is right there to guide participants through each stage of the process.

Who Can Attend?

This program is open to all people with disabilities in the community.
If you self‑identify as a person with a disability, you’re welcome to join.

The goal is simple: to make an essential life skill accessible for everyone, regardless of age, experience level, or support needs.

Why Laundry Skills Matter

Laundry is more than a chore—it’s a building block of independent living. Learning how to manage your clothes helps you:

  • Build confidence in daily routines
  • Increase independence at home
  • Practice organization and time management
  • Reduce reliance on others
  • Gain skills that translate to other household tasks

At RCIL, we know that independence looks different for everyone. Programs like this empower individuals to take steps forward at their own pace, with the support they need to succeed.

Hands‑On, Supportive, and Completely Free

RCIL’s Laundry Skills Program is:

  • Free for all participants
  • Hands‑on and supportive
  • Designed to teach real skills
  • A great way to connect with others

Whether you’re learning how to use a washing machine for the first time or building confidence with new routines, our team is here to help.
