International Epilepsy Day: Raising Awareness, Reducing Stigma, and Supporting Independence
Every year, people around the globe recognize International Epilepsy Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness, challenging stigma, and highlighting the experiences of the more than 50 million people worldwide who live with epilepsy. At RCIL, we honor this day by reaffirming our commitment to ensuring that people with epilepsy have the tools, support, and opportunities they need to live independently and confidently in their communities.
What Is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a chronic noncommunicable disease of the brain that causes recurring, unprovoked seizures. Epilepsy affects people of all ages, backgrounds, abilities, and lifestyles. No two people experience epilepsy the same way—seizures vary widely in type, frequency, and intensity.
Understanding epilepsy is one of the most powerful ways to support those who live with it.
Why International Epilepsy Day Matters
Stigma and misinformation remain some of the biggest barriers for people with epilepsy. Many individuals still face discrimination at work, school, or in accessing community activities. Others may hesitate to talk about their diagnosis due to fear of being treated differently.
International Epilepsy Day encourages communities to:
- Learn the facts about epilepsy and seizure safety
- Challenge myths and stereotypes
- Support inclusion in education, employment, and community life
- Amplify the voices of people with epilepsy and their families
When people understand epilepsy, they are better prepared to respond safely during a seizure and more likely to foster supportive, welcoming environments.
RCIL’s Role in Supporting People with Epilepsy
At the Resource Center for Independent Living (RCIL), we believe that everyone—regardless of disability—deserves the right to make choices, live independently, and participate fully in community life. Our programs empower people with epilepsy through:
Independent Living Services
Our team can assist with skill-building, advocacy, community navigation, and identifying resources that support independence.
Self-Direction and Home- and Community-Based Services
Individuals can design supports that match their needs and goals, whether that includes daily living supports, employment assistance, or community engagement.
NY Connects
Our NY Connects team helps individuals find services, benefits, and long-term support options that promote safety, independence, and a high quality of life.
Community Education
RCIL offers outreach and training that promote disability awareness—including understanding invisible disabilities such as epilepsy.
How You Can Support People with Epilepsy
Simple actions can make a big difference:
- Avoid assumptions about what someone with epilepsy can or cannot do
- Speak up when you hear misinformation
- Promote accessibility and inclusion in workplaces, schools, and community spaces
- Listen to the experiences of people with epilepsy
By spreading awareness and compassion, we strengthen our communities.
Together, We Can Build a More Inclusive Community
International Epilepsy Day reminds us that awareness fuels understanding—and understanding fuels change. RCIL is proud to support individuals with epilepsy and all people with disabilities as they pursue independence, self-determination, and full participation in community life.
If you or someone you know is living with epilepsy and could benefit from support, RCIL is here to help.
